Set in the picturesque Hemel en Aarde Valley and surrounded by the beautiful Klein River mountains, fynbos and pasture lands, Glen Oakes Farm is a 300-hectare livestock farm owned by Jules and Charles Crowther, who pride themselves on their Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) pasture-reared pigs.
“Our pigs grow up slowly in a low-stress environment,” explains Jules. “This is what makes all the difference to the flavour and quality of our meat.” The Crowthers raise their Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW pigs on outdoors on pasture and range at Glen Oakes Farm. “We love what we do. We love our pigs and take pride in maintaining the most healthy, natural and sustainable life for our pigs.”
The Crowthers are passionate about the benefits of raising pigs outdoors on pasture in an environment that allows them to perform natural behaviors like wallowing, grazing and rooting with their snouts. “The pigs graze on pastures and dig for grubs, crunchy acorns and delicious roots. The most important thing of all is making sure the life our animals lead on the farm is as close to perfect as we can provide,” says Charles.
This high-welfare management is a fundamental component of AGW certification and is known to have environmental, nutritional, and culinary benefits. Glen Oakes Farm pigs are produced mainly for charcuterie – the art of curing pork, traditionally done in France, Spain and Italy. “The quality of the meat is determined by a few things; the breed, diet, exercise and stress,” explains Jules. “Time is essential in the process of this technique of curing meat naturally, so the flavour and fat distribution is of utmost importance.”
For Charles and Jules, the decision to become Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW was an easy one: “A Greener World’s standards aligned very closely with the practices we were already using, and we knew this third-party farm certification would offer consumers who can’t see or visit our farm a degree of comfort that the animals are raised according to the highest animal welfare standards.”
Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW pork products are available at various retail and restaurant locations in the Western Cape, as well as directly from the farm.
